AAALS
ANNUAL CONFERENCE
2004
Hotel Pennsylvania:
The conference will be held at the Hotel
Pennsylvania, 401 Seventh Avenue, New York. The hotel is very close
to Times Square and the Broadway theatres, and convenient to public
transportation. Designed by McKim, Mead, and White (the Stanford White
of Doctorow's Ragtime), the
Pennsylvania was the largest hotel in the world at its completion in
1919. Its ballroom was famous as a jazz and big band venue in the
1930's, and The Glenn Miller Orchestra immortalized its telephone
number--Pennsylvania 6-5000. The hotel is across the street from the
Pennsylvania Railroad Station, from which, as fans know, the
Chattanooga Choo-Choo would leave at a quarter to four. The rooms, of
course, have been completely modernized. A special conference rate will
be available.
Conference Dinner:
The conference dinner will be a Chinatown banquet, New York style.
After the Sessions:
While the conference will take place too early for our traditional
excursion to a baseball game, we hope that everyone will plan a full
visit. Along with Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, the art scene is
booming: the Whitney Biennial will be in full swing, the Met will be
showing Chuck Close and Paul Klee, and the Museum of Modern Art
(temporarily located in Queens, an easy subway ride) will feature
Dieter Roth.
Other attractions will be posted here later.
