AAALS ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2004


 

The Nineteenth Annual AAALS Conference
 was hosted by John Scheckter in New York City

Date: 25-27 March 2004



Theme: “Playing Australia”


Proposals are sought on the widest range of literary interpretations of the topic: Performing, enacting, inscribing the nation or landscape; theater,
film, public arts, informal spectacle; role-playing, game-playing, playing sport; packaging, advertising, selling, exporting Australia; literary hoaxes (Ern Malley, Demidenko), playing around, playing jokes, fraud; modeling (social sicence/couture), experimentation
(political/scientific); setting boundaries.

Peter Carey and Kevin Hart will be among several guest writers appearing at the conference. Deadline for all proposals is January 15, 2004.

Contributions from graduate students and beginning PhDs are welcome, as are those from other ranks of the profession.

The registration form may be printed and mailed or downloaded and emailed as an attachment. Please mail your check or money order (in US$ payable to AAALS), or your credit card information (VISA or Mastercard only). If you send credit card information by email, please be aware that we do not have an encrypted secure link. Cash payment will be accepted at the conference.


Student Prize

AAALS will award a one hundred dollar prize for the best presentation by a student. The Albert Wertheim Prize is given in memory of a great teacher and our long-time member, supporter, and friend.

Membership

Please consider renewing or beginning your AAALS membership the easy way: at the same time as you register for the conference. Membership includes subscriptions to Antipodes and the AAALS Newsletter.

Registration

The registration fee includes all events except the banquet: the opening reception, morning coffee and tea on both session days, Saturday luncheon, and all sessions and readings.

Hotel

Most conference events will take place at the Hotel Pennsylvania, 401 Seventh Ave. (at 33rd St.). Special room rates, beginning at $129 single or double, are available for those who make reservations before 4 March. Please reserve your own room by calling the hotel at 1-800-223-8585 or 1-212-736-5000, ext. 8460. Be sure to mention the AAALS Conference.

 

Banquet

The conference dinner will be a Chinatown feast at the Mandarin Court Restaurant, 61 Mott Street.
